The business gaffe – when it happens – is unforgettable…and sometimes causes
irreparable damage. Here’s an example:
Susan, a soon-to-graduate Ivy Leaguer, has lived in New England all of her life. Now she’s interviewing with a Texas oil company. She’s excited about the opportunity and has brought her A-game to a lunch at the HR manager’s favorite Mexican restaurant in downtown Houston.
When a covered container of warmed corn tortillas is passed to her, Susan is uncertain of what’s in the bowl. She remembers past formal occasions and assumes this is something similar. She takes one of the tortillas and uses it as a finger towel, wiping her hands and then her face – all to the amazement of her
corporate hosts.
Sound absurd? Unfortunately, the story is true. Susan is not alone in wondering,
“What’s the right thing to do in a social or business situation.”We are living in a time of etiquette ambiguity.What was once the behavioral norm has disappeared.
