Valerie,

I agree that you need to know your audience and how you would like to communicate, but you do have to consider that lol and omg have been added as word to the Oxford dictionary, so they are officially considered words.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/24/lol-omg-oxford-english-dictionary_n_840229.html

If abbreviations are not in the dictionary I would hesitate to use it, but considering many are now being credited as official words it goes back to word choice.

Do you think if a word being in the Oxford dictionary makes difference?

This is really interesting. I wonder if there is current research that either refines Maslow or refutes him. The other issue, of course, is how one can reach, or what one can do, to reach the 5th level.

The fact is, little things do count when they represent an extension of your brand. Most CEOs I have worked with carry a pen that is commensurate with their level, especially when signing important documents. And preferably black ink when signing anything official.
Maybe it's different in Texas as compared to Chicago, but knocking someone because they brought a plastic pen? I've interviewed with CEOs who were using plastic pens. Sounds ridiculous.

Jan:
You are right! Adding to this, one of the facts of life today is that many people are addicted to their PDA. Just this week a colleague told me about a client who could hardly carry on an intelligent conversation at lunch because he kept getting "dinged" with messages. Instead of turning it off, he continued to check them out. I call that rude! And unfortunately, there was nothing my colleague could have said graciously to ask him to LISTEN instead of getting so distracted. So the message is - let PDA's keep us connected, but not keep us from connecting!
